Faculty of Social Science and Humanities in Air University

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities consists of tailor-made courses at various levels in English. State-of-the-art technology in language laboratories and computer-aided programs add to the usual classroom teaching and it has widespread electronic and pedagogical facilities. The Faculty has only one department i.e. the Department of Humanities, which offers courses of English language and Humanities to the undergraduate students of the Faculties of Engineering and Administrative Sciences. Additionally, they have launched a Masters of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.

The faculty understands the need of today’s robust corporate environment and prepares students for positions of greater responsibility in their chosen field of profession inspire students to develop specialized skills in writing, speaking, critical thinking, research and design. The faculty aims not just to pass on human capital but also social capital in the form of social norms and rules, to participate more effectively in the formal and informal events of society.

It does so through its courses of English for specific and academic purposes and Sociology and Psychology. The university plans to extend the courses at an appropriate time to Career Management Skills, Anthropology, International Relations, Defence and Strategic Studies, Media studies, Public Speaking, Environmental Studies, Pakistani Literature in English, and a PGD ELT course for graduate and postgraduate students in a phased manner.

The Faculty of Social Sciences through its student societies grooms students to combine their theoretical knowledge with an understanding of the cultural and political processes to participate more effectively in the formal and informal events.

Department of Humanities

The Department of Humanities comprises of regular, experienced, well-qualified and motivated teachers whose primary job is to impart top notch knowledge to students of the University. The approach of Department of Humanities is student-centered, and skill-based, encouraging students to interact with one another and teachers through regular co-curricular activities such as dramatics, educational outings, functions, debates, speech contests, poetry recitations and essay competitions.

The courses are designed to include specific components to help students in their departmental studies, and also to provide them with persistence in their future assignments.

Courses Offered by the Department of Humanities

Besides teaching the Engineering and Managements students, the Department of Humanities has its three certificate courses. The courses are:
  • Certificate in Functional English
  • Certificate in Conservation Skills in English
  • Certificate in Technical English.
Students who have cleared matriculation are eligible for the Functional English and Conversations skills course. However the certificate in Technical English course can be done after completion of Intermediate level.

English Language and Linguistics Research Group

The researchers at the university have formed a group for research in Linguistics and English Language field.  The major research areas of the group are Language Acquisition and Bilingualism, Language and Identity, Language Power, Policy and Planning, Digital and Trans-literacies; and Discourse Theory.

ELL is also keen to promote interdisciplinary research with people working on language acquisition within neighbouring disciplines like Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Computer Science and Education. ELL members comprise of excellent students who wish to carry out postgraduate research leading to PhD on the topics mentioned above.
