After obtaining Bachelors degree, students may proceed for a masters degree program and then for Doctoral Degree, Ph.D. etc. Some Masters Degrees also consist of 1.5 years. Then there are PhD programmes. One has to choose specific field and the suitable university for doing research work in that field. PhD in Pakistan consists of minimum 3-5 years.
There exists a parallel education system in place in some private schools, i.e. the 'O' level and 'A' level system. The University of Cambridge of the UK sets these curriculums. Students studying in this system do not follow the syllabi set by the Pakistan government, but subjects such as Islamiyat are still compulsory for most of high school students.
Pakistan has joined UNESCO on September 14,1949. The country has one National Office in Islamabad. UNESCO obliges with Pakistan with in the E-9 Initiative, a commitment by nine high-population countries to reach the Education for All (EFA) goals. Pakistan participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. Pakistan also holds UNESCO Chair in Distance Education and is home to one UNEVOC centre.
As of September 2006, the country has 238 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Projects Network (ASPnet).The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has conducted detailed study on Education and Literacy Scenario in Pakistan.
